Our Top Songs

Dan:
For my Top 20 list I chose songs from the bands that inspire me the most, along with some that have just stayed with me. Most of the songs on my list either have a powerful message in their lyrics or are relatable. Dutch band Within Temptation are my favourite band (hence the three tracks from them!). And We Run (ft. Xzibit) and What Have You Done (ft. Keith Caputo) are two songs that never fail to put me in a good mood, despite them being quite mellow songs. I find that these two tracks are motivational, especially And We Run, as the verse performed by Xzibit tells the listener about getting through the hardship in order to succeed. The third track that I chose from Within Temptation, the haunting The Whole World is Watching, is another emotive track that almost had me in tears the first time I heard it. Songs like these always stay with me, purely because of the power in the lyrics. Aside from Within Temptation, I have also chosen music from Linkin Park and Sirenia. Again, I always enjoy listening to music from these two bands and the variety of songs that they produce is outstanding. |
For example, Linkin Park’s Iridescent is much slower and moving than Sirens of the Seven Seas by Sirenia. It is this contrast that means
that these two metal powerhouses have made it onto my playlist.
As you might have guessed, I enjoy metal and rock. However some of the music in the charts today has also caught my ear. Ed Sheeran’s Sing always gets me singing whenever I hear it, as does the chirpy and motivational Happy from Pharrell Williams. In my playlist, I have tried to highlight my varied music tastes – I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I do!

Daisay:
My list is a Top 30 list, because cutting it down to 20 was like Sophie's Choice, you know? Now, anyone who truly knows me, knows that I'd definitely include Sonic Youth, Pixies and Queens of the Stone Age on my top list. Songs like Misfit Love by Queens of the Stone Age, Psycho Killer by Talking Heads, Icky Thump by The White Stripes, Bone Machine by Pixies, Sheela-Na-Gig by PJ Harvey and Dance Song '97 by Sleater-Kinney and Sliver by Nirvana are high up on my list because they're such fun (but not simple) rock songs, that always have me singing along and letting loose a little. Quiet. Loud. Quiet. Loud. This is the form that has made Tame by Pixies so legendary. The chorus is just one word violently yelled over and over, "TAME! TAME!" And this is arguably the best track that Pixies play live because every single person in the room is screaming along at the top of their lungs with Black Francis. It's the most primal thing. |
I have a soft spot for soul and blues, and Hey by Pixies, Blue Soul by Graveyard, Rest My Chemistry by Interpol and The White Stripes' cover of Jolene by Dolly Parton are incredible examples of how to successfully adapt and blend influences of country, soul and blues into modern rock.
The best songs to completely calm me down when I need to just chill out, are Hljómalind and Ágætis byrjun by Sigur Rós.
Of the Grunge-era of music, The Breeders wrote such perfect songs, especially on their first two albums Pod and Last Splash. Glorious is such a mellow track, I love it.
Finally, some of the songs I've chosen on this list are included because of special memories they hold for me. For instance, Better Living Through Chemistry by Queens of The Stone Age, always brings me back to being 8 years old and being introduced to different styles of music by my older brother.
